MDF Panelling Frequently Asked Questions
What are some wall panelling tips for easy installation?
Installing wall panels to your room is easy as a DIY project, especially when using no nails adhesive.
If cutting down MDF strips or panels, make sure you use respiratory protection because of the fine dust. As much as possible, buy wall panelling that is cut-to-size as this will simplify the installation process.
Prepare surfaces thoroughly before installing panels, such as by sanding down the walls to ensure they're smooth. You should also make sure the walls are completely dry and free from grease.
We provide a detailed instruction manual with your kit, and we have an instructional video you can follow to create great results with minimal effort.
We've also broken down the top ways to install panelling in a handy step-by-step guide.
What colours should I choose for wall panels?
MDF is easy to paint, so can be easily customised to match a room's colour scheme. There's the option to order our wall panels with a pre-primed surface so they're ready to paint. With this in mind, you can easily match them to any colour scheme.
To achieve a dramatic, intimate space, try dark colours like navy and maroon.
Or, for a fresh and airy look, stick to lighter colours like white, pale brown and pastels.
You could also consider painting half-wall panelling in a bold colour while keeping the rest of the wall more neutral for a sophisticated contrast.
What are popular styles of wall panelling?
There are lots of wall panelling styles to choose from, such as:
- Wainscoting – This covers the lower third of a wall, adding a classic style to rooms while helping to protect walls from scuffs.
- Shaker – When panelling strips are applied in square or rectangular formations to create symmetrical designs with clean lines, this is known as shaker style.
- Geometric – MDF strips can be added to walls in abstract, geometric designs for striking feature walls.
- Tongue and groove – This relates to how the panels fit together. Tongue and groove leads to a seamless appearance.
- Ribbed – We have panelling with 15mm ribs and 30mm ribs, which are ideal for introducing subtle textures to a wall.
What materials are best for wall panelling?
Wall panelling varies by material and style, so it's worth comparing options to find the right type for your home and budget.
We have some natural wood products which are ideal for authentic grain textures and durability.
However, if you're looking for a more cost-effective option, try wall panels made from medium density fibreboard (MDF). It's an engineered wood product, created from wood fibres, wax and resin, that mimics traditional materials.
High-quality MDF is resistant to warping and has a smooth, uniform surface. They can cover issues like dents and stains on walls, allowing you to easily create a sleek and long-lasting design for a lower cost.
Which wall panelling is suitable for high traffic areas?
Wainscoting is ideal for high traffic living spaces like staircases and hallways as it helps to protect the wall from scuffs. It usually covers the bottom half of a wall, creating a balance of stylish design and practicality.
For parts of the home where lots of people walk through each day, try our Regal Wainscoting Wall Panelling.
Do I need a carpenter to measure my walls before ordering?
There's no need to hire a carpenter for measurements. You can measure your wall's width and height at home using a tape measure. You do need to be accurate, so remember to measure right from the floor or skirting board up to the ceiling, and double check it's correct before placing your order.
As our collection includes made-to-measure MDF wall panelling strips, you can get the perfect wall panels for your room.
Are wall panels moisture resistant?
Some (but not all) wall panels are moisture resistant. If standard MDF absorbs liquid, it can potentially become swollen and damaged, so avoid excessive moisture exposure.
However, it's possible to get moisture-resistant MDF that's much more suitable for humid rooms. It's still best to avoid panelling wet areas like showers, but it helps with walls that are prone to getting a bit of moisture, such as from steam.
So, for rooms with high humidity levels, panels with moisture resistant properties are the ideal choice. We suggest moisture resistant panelling strips as a way to add depth to bathrooms with a durable finish.

How can I add a different style and pattern on my wall?
We offer custom panelling kits. So, if you'd like a specific style such as geometric, artistic designs tailored to your living areas, send us an example and we'll come back with suggestions. You can also create geometric patterns and textures with our 3D effect panels – ideal for creative feature walls.
Or, if you're looking for a stripped-back style with interesting texture, consider ribbed or fluted panels for a subtly luxurious design. Another great alternative is adding shaker-style wall panelling in square or rectangular frames. These add visual interest through striking shadows and a timeless finish.
Can I order more than one panelling kit?
Yes, we advise you to treat each wall as a separate design. If you need assistance with the ordering process, please email us: sales@panellingdirect.co.uk.
I've made a mistake on my order, how do I correct it?
Contact us via email: customerservices@panellingdirect.co.uk. We'll get back to you as soon as we can to discuss your options.
Is wall panelling the only service you do?
We're DIY specialists. As well as decorative MDF wall panels, we also offer bespoke decking, cladding, timber and sheets cut to size.
How do you install wall panelling?
Installation is easy. You'll need to make sure your measurements are correct and prepare the walls by sanding down any rough areas.
If you buy cut-to-size panelling, it will simplify the process for you. But if you do need to cut down your MDF, it's pretty easy to do with a circular saw or jigsaw. Just be sure to wear all the correct safety gear, including respiratory masks to protect from dust.
The MDF panelling can then be applied directly to the wall using adhesive or nails. Generally, leaving gaps of around 500 to 650mm between each panel creates a sleek, balanced look.
With proper installation, MDF panelling should be very durable with minimal issues.
We explain this in more detail in our video tutorial.
Do you provide tools with the kits?
Yes, we offer the standard tools and accessories as an optional add on to ensure your wall panelling is easy to install at home. The kits also come primed with pre-cut panels.
