Beautiful autumn decor ideas for a cosy home makeover

If, like us, you’re very ready for cosy season, these autumn decor ideas are perfect for your next DIY project.

Now the weather’s getting cooler, leaves are turning brown and kids have returned to school, it’s the perfect time for an autumn home makeover.

These few months between the chaos of summer and the busyness of winter give us a chance to stop and breathe. And it’s such a lovely feeling when your house reflects this, welcoming in the new season with a refreshed look.

This year, we’re loving earthy colour palettes, gentle textures and warm lighting. So, if you’re looking for inspiration, here are loads of brilliant ways to decorate your home this autumn.

7 autumn interior design trends to take inspiration from

1. Add headboard panelling in autumnal colours

Headboard panelling transforms rooms with a traditional and super homely look. Once it’s installed on the wall behind the bed and bedside tables, it essentially frames the furniture, giving the space a curated feel.

You can then paint it in any colour of your choice. If, for example, you paint the panelling in an autumnal colour, such as burnt orange or forest green, it helps to create a bedroom that oozes calmness.

To achieve this look, try our cut-to-size headboard panelling tool.

Once it’s complete, you’ll have an elegant bedroom to relax in. Just imagine unwinding in your newly decorated room, maybe curled up with a good book while the rain trickles down outside. Bliss.

2. Incorporate earthy tones throughout a room

If you’re planning a full-room makeover, you have the chance to go all out with cosy decor this autumn.

To create a gentle, welcoming space, consider bringing in earthy tones to different elements of a room, such as the wall paint, cabinets and furnishings. For example, in the image above, the green tone of the sofa complements the neutral shades on the walls, tied together with the light wood table.

In particular, the half-wall panelling adds some gorgeous depth and texture. You can create this look with MDF panelling strips, and we sell cut-to-size strips to help you get the perfect ones for your wall.

3. Decorate your front door with an autumnal wreath

Why wait until Christmas to adorn your door with a wreath? Autumn wreaths are becoming increasingly popular, adding rich orange, brown and golden tones to front doors.

You can often find artificial wreaths for decent prices from the high street, as well as real ones from independent stores.

4. Swap out your summer bedding for warmer alternatives

One of the most affordable autumn decor ideas is refreshing your bedding. Because, though generally inexpensive, the right duvet and pillow set often has the power to make your bedroom feel properly ready for the new season.

Bedding can tie together different aspects of a room’s design and make it look complete. However, think carefully about what colours and patterns to choose to make sure they suit the rest of the decor.

As long as everything works well together, the refreshed bedding may well be enough to give a room a new and improved look.

5. Subtly include pumpkin and leaf motifs in your decor

We love an autumn motif.

Leaf shaped candles? Absolutely. Pumpkin themed ornaments? Already in the basket.

Just about every home furnishings store right now is full of adorable autumn decorations. And we’re all here for it.

6. Opt for warm lighting

While all the above autumn decor ideas will make a huge difference in updating your home for autumn, one of our absolute favourite ways to make rooms nice and cosy is with warm lighting.

Lamps and candles are ideal for this. As much as possible, avoid harsh overhead lights and keep rooms softly lit.

7. Cover your sofa in soft blankets and cushions

If your living room is crying out for an autumnal makeover, one easy changing to make is adding blankets and cushions to your sofa.

Similar to bedding, treat the cushions and blankets like a room’s finishing touches. Choosing rich colours like burgundy, navy, brown and green will help to create a little autumnal oasis.

Autumnal wall panelling tips

Getting your house ready ahead of the festive season? Autumn is the ideal time for house decor. And if you’re thinking about panelling your rooms, we suggest thinking carefully about the style of panels to choose, as well as the colour to paint them.

As we mentioned earlier, headboard panelling is an excellent choice for bedrooms.

In rooms like living rooms and dining rooms, we also suggest shaker panelling. This is where panel strips are arranged in symmetrical square or rectangle formations on the wall.

Or, alternatively, you could add tongue and groove panelling throughout the house. It’s possible to achieve this style with moisture-resistant MDF panelling, making it suitable for humid rooms like kitchens and bathrooms.

Then, when painting your wall panelling, it’s your chance to create your autumnal haven with all your favourite seasonal colours.
