How to Install Your DIY Panelling Strips
Fitting MDF panelling strips is simpler than you might think. Just follow our step-by-step guide:
1. Plan your design - Planning ensures a professional finish, whether you want traditional half wall panelling or a full height feature. So, start off by sketching your panel layout.
2. Gather your materials - You’ll need:
o MDF panelling strips
o No More Nails adhesive
o Panel pins (optional for extra hold)
o Tape measure and pencil
o Spirit level
o Sandpaper or sander
o Polyfilla
o Paint and brush
3. Measure and cut - Take your wall measurements and pre-cut your strips accordingly. Or use Panelling Direct’s made-to-measure service if you're not keen on doing the cutting on a DIY basis. Optional pre-cutting and pre-priming means you can get straight to fitting and painting.
4. Prepare the wall - Lightly sand the wall to remove any imperfections. This helps the adhesive bond better.
5. Attach the base rail - Apply No More Nails adhesive to the back of your base rail and press it firmly onto the wall. Use a spirit level to keep it straight.
6. Secure the top rail - Repeat the process for the top rail, ensuring it aligns perfectly.
7. Fix the first vertical panel - Start in one corner and attach the first vertical panel strip, securing it with adhesive (and optional panel pins for extra hold while the adhesive sets).
8. Space out and attach the remaining vertical panels - Use one of your horizontal strips as a spacer to ensure even gaps. Then attach all remaining vertical panels.
9. Secure the horizontal rails - Once all vertical panels are in place, attach the horizontal rails with No More Nails adhesive (again using optional panel pins for extra hold while the adhesive sets).
10. Fill, sand and paint - Fill any gaps with Polyfilla, sand down joints for a seamless finish, then paint in your chosen colour.
